"Weaseling out of things is important to learn. It's what separates us from the animals ... except the weasel." --Homer Simpson
If you watch the 35 minute video produced by Anglican TV, Archbishop Venables (Southern Cone, based in Argentina) makes it quite clear that he does not intend to stop his cross province trespassing. In particular, if you listen from, roughly, minute 20 forward, he specifically addresses it.
So... it's basically over. He and other Gafconites will continue invading the US church province, and likely the Canadian church province, and probably others as well. The Gafconites will go their own way which, in my mind, is an overall blessing for everyone. Litigation will continue and likely get more intense.
There is absolutely no reason for TEC to take a sideways step to meet any kind of covenant or understanding or whatever word one wants to paste on it.
On one thing I would probably agree with Venables, and that is that in ten years, the Communion will look very different. I think we should start now, actually.
Let's all get on with it. Gafconites, elect your equal to Rowan and go in peace. TEC, make some bold decision in 2009, and get on with it.
But please, play nice, be respectful as you can, say the five words often and GET ON WITH IT.
While Bishops may be reticent to act, I think many in the pews just want to get back to what it is that is important to them and that is not the continuing argument.
Go, stay, whatever--but JUST DO IT!
